Did you know that occupations that require sitting for a long time, have the highest prevalence of back pain? If your job involves sitting in front of computer for a long time make sure to adjust the monitor to your eye level and keep your hands close to the body while using keyboard. To prevent the hazardous effect of prolonged immobility, all you need to do is get up and move around. 6. Park Your Car Away From Your Workplace

Car Parking
With the busy work schedules it may be difficult at times to hit the gym or go for walk before going to work. But, what if we fit physical activity in the work schedule itself? If you look closely there are number of opportunities for some activity in your daily work schedule. One smart way is to park your car at some distance and walk few miles rather than simply stepping out of car into the elevator. So, now stop struggling to get the parking slot closest to the elevator.

7. Take the Staircase Instead of Elevator
stairs
Climbing stairs is a recognized form of vigorous physical activity. Experts suggest that you burn 7 times more calories when you take the stairs rather than taking the elevator. This happens because with every step you climb you burn about 0.17 calories. However, if you have problems with your knee or heart, climbing stairs every day can be unsafe for you.

8. Stand When Possible

Travel Wellness

Holiday time is almost here, planning of vacations, travelling to see your folks, flying to your best friend’s wedding is all on the calendar. Travel for work or pleasure can always be stressful. Right from the planning, booking tickets, hotels, site seeing until the end of the journey.

This is that time of the year when your routine goes off, your sleep schedule isn’t normal. As much as we deny it vacations can be extremely stressful and filled with aches and pains.

Of course there are ways you can be cautious and prevent yourself from any Holiday stress and stay absolutely calm and fit. Don’t worry, no one is asking you to wake up at 6 am and jog for an hour or go and hunt for the gym in your hotel. There are always other ways of maintaining your well-being; here are few of our suggestions:

  1. Wherever in the world you are, wake up and have a few glasses of water, it helps cleanse your mind and your system. This not only ensures you having a good start to your day but also a good day overall.
  2. Stay hydrated always. We all have fears of not finding hygienic toilets and curb our water intake, but for a fit journey you must always keep yourself hydrated. It prevents you from motion sickness, high altitude sickness, indigestion etc.
  3. Stiff muscles are a common complain for most corporate and holiday travellers, stiffness in your body can lead to injuries as well. To prevent yourself from stiffness… Exercise! Keep it very simple and basic, like while travelling (in the car / flight / train / bus) stretch & twist your wrists, arms, legs and ankles to keep them awake and active. Do this at regular intervals.
  4. Get a foot massage! Even if you are not in South East Asia, most airports in the world now have state-of-the-art foot spas, take that 30 minutes out and refresh yourself. A quick foot massage does wonders for the body:
    • It boosts your energy levels, making you feel fresh and rejuvenated
    • It enhances blood circulation
    • It reduces anxiety and stress that could have been caused by pre-travel chaos
    • It helps mitigate incidence of indigestion which is a big concern for many who have a sensitive stomach, especially whilst on a holiday
    • It reduces your aches and pains, relaxing your muscles
    • It prevents head aches and migraines
  5. Travel Light! It’s a tough thing to do for women, but running around with heavy luggage isn’t the best idea. So pack wisely and travel light in a self-carry friendly suit case.
  6. Take a break… Holidaying can also get stressful especially if you have a packed itinerary, so make sure you spend at least one meal that is absolutely relaxed, calm and quiet may be overlooking a beautiful valley or a beach just to get that peace of mind for which you actually planned the holiday! 🙂

Happy travelling!

WELL… it is NESSessary!

Health and Wellness is something that is easy to take for granted. Our everyday routine includes: sleep, food, work and play. Some of us are conscious enough to be aware of what we eat and drink; how we sleep; how we work through the day, but there are others who think they are doing just fine and it is not necessary for them to alter the way they LIVE. So are you really LIVING?

Food: Food is the most important part of LIFE, if not important it is surely a part of everyone’s life be it a child, student, housewife, working professional athlete or any one else. Here are some quick fixes for your food in take, that will be beneficial to lead a healthy and fit lifestyle:

  •  Emphasize fruits and veggies
  • Add in lean meats, low-fat dairy products, and whole grains
  • Cut out processed JUNK
  • Drink a lot of WATER
  • Cook it up (eating home cooked food is always better than eating out)

FITNESS: The next thing that you must look into is your physical fitness. Being a part of this rat race, most of us are these corporate tech freaks who spend hours in front of their laptops working their eyes and shoulders out. How can you maintain your physical wellness like this?

  • Exercise: spend 10 minutes every morning working on some simple exercises
  • Walk: go and walk-up to your colleagues instead of using the intercom
  • Stretch: time and again stretch your shoulders, arms and legs to avoid pains and aches
  • Posture: consciously sit with a straight back and up-right shoulders
  • Stay Active: Sometimes it’s hard to get a workout in between work, social gatherings and other commitments. All you need to do are the smaller efforts to stay active like: park far away from where you’re going, take the stairs instead of the elevator etc.

Picture1Wellness is holistic! For the Body, Mind & Soul! To keep your mind fit and running is equally important as your body. How do we keep our mind fit? What is mental fatigue? However this week let’s focus on our physical wellness with FOOD and FITNESS, next week we shall take on WELLNESS for the MIND and SOUL!

Wish you all a HAPPY Weekend! 🙂

Goodbye Aches!

A common misconception today is that shorter the distance we travel, the less equipped we have to be. Obviously,  you would carry more clothes for a months trip over a day or two. However that doesn’t call for aching backs or joints after a short flight. Kids like travelling in big jumbo planes where the seats are big for them and they’re in the middle of the sky but on the other hands the adults just like their sleep and space. Thousands of people travel on flights everyday for various purposes however only a very small amount remember to carry the essentials for a flight.images
Everyone looks forward to having a good physique and posture but its quite bewildering that after a flight they always start complaining about their shoulder or their back or how the flight moved so much. Thats the only reason why theres a shop in every airport for selling you things that you may not want but you certainly need during your travel time. Those people do their best to ensure that you have a safe travel but the flight always ends in a different way!
From the most basic things like sitting with a correct posture and placing your arms the right way can save you a lot of trouble after a tedious flight. There are some possible things that can be done to evade the burden:
  • Use a travel pillow!
  • Cotton in the ears, always a solution
  • Chewing gum always kills the air pressure
  • Wearing tracks or cozy pants
  • Don’t slouch — you’ll regret it!
The most basic things can help you avoid the biggest pains. These really come in handy for those who can’t stop whining after an hour’s flight. You wouldn’t want to be the one sitting on a wheelchair and getting pushed by someone else.

Pain & Gain

There was always a time where we told our parents that we weren’t scared of anything in this world. Be it leopards or thieves, we were ready to face what the world had in store for us, regardless of the pain inflicted. The faster we grow up, the more pain we experience and similarly more the pain we can endure. Pain could be of any sort including mental or physical but even the smallest amount of pain can do the damage!
The pain comes from within only when we grow up and experience a greater part of the world. Any ache or pain can be dealt with in two ways. One way would be expressing your pain and hurting the people around you and the other way would be keeping it to yourself and finding a way out to deal with it.
Pain-Management
Any sort of pain or distress can be caused by the people around you or even by yourself. You never know when you have borne the ache on yourself. Right from suffering a minute back ache in the morning to a very emotional quarrel with someone can really inflict pain. It’s the degree of pain that matters and not the kind of pain borne. The smallest things could cause the largest amounts of pain and we still may not know it.
The trick is to not get rid of the pain but to control it. It may take a very long time to get rid of it or it may vanish within the span of seconds however the feeling of pain truly tests your capability. There may be nothing you can do to get rid of it but surely there are ways to control it and keep it inside. Some very basic ways such as:
  • Counting to 10 and keeping your cool
  • Meditation. Proved to be the most effective!
  • Sharing the pain with someone close
  • Sleeping if off – works most of the times
  • Distractions – the best way to get your mind working again
People consider speaking to a therapist or an advisor at times of ache or pain because they don’t know the path they are on. To overcome the pain, your potential is truly tested. You may not like it but to prove yourself you definitely have to go out of the way and achieve the impossible. Pain isn’t something which can be measured or tangible, its one of the smallest obstacles in life which just requires a little jump to be tackled with.
